Today we celebrate Freedom and commemorate the Liberation of Breda, 80 years ago!

Today, May 5th, we celebrate throughout the Netherlands the precious freedom we regained 80 years ago. A day of gratitude, remembrance, and reflection on the value of peace. But for us in Breda, this day holds an extra special meaning. Today also marks the remembrance of the day our city, after long and dark years, threw off the yoke of occupation.

October 29, 1944: Breda Rises in Freedom

On October 29, 1944, 80 years ago, the fear and oppression in Breda came to an end. After courageous efforts by the Allied troops, with a key role for the 1st Polish Armored Division under the command of General Maczek, our city was liberated. The relief and joy must have been immense when the first liberators marched into Breda.

The liberation of Breda was a turning point, not only for our city, but for the entire Netherlands. It was an important step towards the eventual liberation of our entire country. The Polish soldiers were welcomed as heroes, and the bond between Breda and Poland remains warm and strong to this day. The names of streets and squares still bear witness to this rewarding period.

Freedom: A precious possession

On this Liberation Day, we reflect on the immense sacrifice made to give us the freedom we now take for granted. We commemorate the victims of war, the resistance fighters, and the Allied soldiers who gave their lives for our liberation. Their courage and sacrifice must never be forgotten.

Freedom is not something to be taken for granted. It is a precious possession that we must cherish and protect. On this May 5th, let us reflect on the importance of tolerance, respect, and democracy – the foundations of a free society.
